UK battery producers are on track to meet targets which state that ten per cent of waste batteries are collected for recycling by the end of the year, according to recently-released data.

Figures from the National Packaging Waste Database found that ten per cent of batteries were recycled in the third quarter, reports Lets Recycle.

This amounted to 1,087 tonnes of the 10,699 portable batteries released onto the market.

However, this marked a drop from 16 per cent in the second quarter of the year.

Over the year so far, an average of 11.64 per cent of all batteries have been recycled.

By 2012, the UK will have to recycle 25 per cent of portable batteries under the European Union Battery Directive.

The next interim goal is 18 per cent by 2011.

Recent research by Consumer Focus found that Britons dumped around 85 million mobile phones in landfill sites instead of recycling them.
